Kind of ironic, isn't it? A product that I want to take a picture of for the column is sealed into a tamper-proof plastic packet that defies opening. You'd almost think that they were trying to make it water-proof...
" Water-proof " and " water-resistant " are two separate terms - separated not only by a rubber membrane but also by user folly and legal interest. Are legal loopholes resistant or proof...? In other words, any time a manufacturer claims that a product is water-proof, some enthusiast will set about trying to get the inside of it wet so that they can complain. Better to
provide proof but only
claim resistance.
Well, I am not such a cynic. I have owned Pelican products for decades and I have yet to find a fault in their sealing. If I have cleaned the rubber bit and the plastic channel that goes with it, the outside can get as wet as it likes and the gear inside is fine. I even stand on my Pelican rolling case for hours at a time at dance shows to get above the sequins and the glitter. The carpet at the studio has long been submerged under broken costume bits but the inside of the Pelican is as clean as a whistle.
This little Pelican case is for cards - SD, SD Mini, and SD Micro. You could pack it full of 24 different cards on 4 different layers. It's got the characteristic Pelican polycarbonate outer and the rubber seal plus a postive latch. I don't suppose you could drive the car over the thing, but I'll bet you could jump on it with impunity.
Now I don't lead the kind of life that jumps on anything, nor climbs over rocks, nor gets dumped in the surf. My cards can live in a cloth holder and stay safe - but you may be different. You might need all the protection this case can give, and you might need it to resist baggage compartment pummelling as well. For under $ 40 this seems the wisest protection that any active photographer can buy - if you are doing things that this cannot resist, you are in greater danger than your memory cards.
Must go look at the Pelican site. They may make body armour and helmets...
