I think Vincent is nervous. He has a look on his face in this picture that suggests he is not entirely sure what I am going to do with the photo. Nevertheless, he is game enough to be the model for the new lighter Pelican waterproof protection cases and I commend him for his bravery. Even I get nervous when I have an idea...
As you'll see the handle of the Pelican Air case is held by two fingers...and it is not a strain. Pelican have made their protectors 40% lighter than those of their competitors without sacrifiucing strength. How did they do it?
a. New HPX resin and the basic material.
b. Honeycomb panels to keep strength but lose bulk.
c. Full-box designs for strength with hollow sections for lightness.
The torture tests they put these things through sound like something that you'd see on a Japanese game show or school playground:
a. Drop the case on concrete from 2 metres - drop it on all sides and corners.
b. Immerse it in a metre of water for 20 minutes.
c. Drop a 28 pound steel dart on every flat surface from a metre high.
This is probably the sort of dumb stuff Vincent was afraid I was going to do in the shop. Fortunately the Pelican Air cases would withstand it all. In fact I think I have a 24-pounder cannon ball somewhere in the shed...Should be easy, and we have a staircase in the shop that we can roll it down.*
I am a fan of the Pelican brand - I've had four of their older cases, and still retain one for big trek jobs and bad weather storage. It is a roller and I can cheerfully haul it down the steepest staircases in Perth buildings without breaking it. I can also stand on the top of it as a shooting position at the annual Belly Dance races. It is the sort of luggage that Tom Hanks made famous in " Joe And The Volcano ".
Do not neglect to go to the on-line catalog and review the other sorts of cases that Pelican make - because they can accomodate gear of all sizes and shapes. Even if some of them are not the new Air construction, they are still the standard of the industry as far as protection goes.
* Don't mention it to Vincent - I want it to come as a surprise...
