a. Go up the top of Mt. Brown lookout and see the whole sweep of the place.
b. Hit the York Motor Museum and lose the rest of the day looking at the old cars. They do pension and seniors discounts too.
c. Shop in the local craft and country shops. Foods, pottery, clothing, utensils, collectibles and...
d. Books. This is an unsung gem of a bookstore. It looks to be housed in the old fire station or municipal chambers and is the sort of shop that really does have something good for everyone. I scored a 1944 copy of Quentin Reynold's book in the London Blitz for $ 10 and could not be happier.
e. Eat. There are enough pubs, cafés, restaurants, bakeries, ec. to fill the entire inner person. At festival times - and they seem to have about four a year even more eatery options appear, with entertainment to boot. Even the old flour factory down near the railway tracks has a rocket of a café. You won't starve or parch in York.
f. Photograph. Well, they have streets full of buildings and buildings full of architecture and architecture full of character. The original civic builders of York were not short on the sort of grandiose Victorian and Edwardian style - the country buildings of empire. Even on back roads you'll encounter old pubs turned to private residences. There is a fair bit of industrial architecture too - from the flour factory to the Sandalwood Gallery building and the still-busy Shell garage.
There are photo opportunities all over the place - this wasn't a hot rod show day - though they do have a massive York Motorcycle Festival in April - but look at what came to visit on Saturday morning!
Seriously, pack the camera and the wide-angle lenses - and don't just lurk in town - travel out on the country lanes around the place and see what history there is to be found - you won't regret it.
