If you can get past the mobile telephone, there are few pocket-sized cameras left these days. And the makers are regretting that…
They used to make them, with smallish sensors and biggish zooms, in all colours and shapes, and some were elegant indeed. The early 2000’s saw an explosion of compact digital cameras from nearly all makers.
Time went on, cameras got bigger, then lost their mirrors, then got bigger again, then lost their place in the pocket or purse to the mobile telephone. These in their turn have gotten bigger…but that’s okay, because there’s a lot more space in our pockets and purses now, because…
The mobile phone companies charge a very great deal each month. Yet cameras you only have to buy once.
Well, buy this one - the Ricoh GR III Street Edition - put it in your pocket, and head on out.
Full specs are on the C.R. Kennedy website, but the inportant ones include an APS-C sensor/24megapixels, 18mm lens, 100-120400 ISO, DBG raw files, and a 3” LCD screen at back. Then controls are standard and familiar so the learning curve for use is very short and flat.
The “ Street Edition “ is a marketing tag related to the grey finish and orange accent ring about the lens, but all GR III models are really good for street and candid shooting. You get immense files without carrying a giant camera or making yourself stand out. The extra gear you take nearly always is unused. You are also not going to be a howling nuisance at family parties with an intrusive flash or giant lens.
Not to say this is a bad thing - being the old Photographic Uncle can be a very rewarding way of harassing your in-laws on festive occasions. The days of being able to explode a glass flash bulb onto the dinner table just before everyone gets to eat are gone, but you can still hover and demand that people smile. Talking about birdies and cheese will set their teeth on edge and it’ll look like happiness with the clarity slider turned up.
