Well, it’s nearly that time again - the Sunday that Camera Electronic presents PhotoLive Expo 2023 to the photographers of Perth. Of course it means photographers from all over the state - and nation.
People come into town especially for the show. What do you do at the Novotel hotel on Adelaide Terrace between 9:00 and 5:00 on Sunday, 23rd of July?
You look at the new gear on display in the trade room, you talk to the sales people and industry reps. You notice the show special sales and check your wallet for your credit card. Now is the time… You look at the trade stands for printing houses, labs, schools and societies. You talk to their spokespeople and start to think about trying a new paper, a new book, or a new photo course.
You can drink coffee upstairs or beer downstairs, and have a good time. A bit of refreshment is good, and if it’s cold and rainy in the street, it is warm and dry inside.
Expensive? No - if you wish, you can get in for one or two dollars. The money goes into charity buckets for Telethon, and you can’t fault that.
However, there is another side of PhotoLive Expo - the lectures and workshops that take place all day. They are held away from the main trade hall in the conference rooms and theatres of the Novotel. Good seating, good screens, and good sound - you gets what you pays for.
Ah, but you would be wise to book ahead for your ticket for these affairs. They cost more than just the charity dollar, but they deliver far more as well - they
are the product of intelligence and talent on the part of professional photographers - laid out for the entertainment and instruction of the visitors.
The sessions fill up - you might not be able to get in the door if you don’t book ahead. These next few days are a good time to look at the “ menu “ of professionals and select what you would most like to learn. It’ll be hard to decide for people who have wide general photography interests, but specialists or enthusiasts can zero in on a figure who is prominent in the industry or art - and listen to every word. The lecturers are experts and amazingly free with good advice and insight. They light the torches of others without dimming their own lamps.

The whole day is a delight - one comes away with new ideas, new desires, and possibly some new equipment. The photo world is opening up again after
2020 and Camera Electronic’s PhotoLive 2023 is one of the best open doors.
