New Kid On The Red Dot Block

on July 27, 2023

No, not him. He’s not new on the trade stands, though he is always very welcome when he comes to Perth to showcase new Leica equipment. And so he was at the PhotoLive Expo 2023 at the Novotel.

And Cameron brought a new member of the red dot family - the Leica Q3. The latest iteration of a very good, very old, Leica tradition.

Old? It’s a 60 megapixel digital camera. It has a hybrid AF system - and a phenomenally precise lens - and 8K view capability - and an OLED viewfinder - and a tilting LCD screen. It connects to a Leica FOTOS app. It can be charged wirelessly. What’s old about this - this is BRAND NEW!

( So new that you’ll be waiting a little for it if you order now - welcome to the present day… )

What’s old is it is the best quality production from the same people who made all the other Leica cameras - right back to the O’s and 1a’s, at the start of consumer 35mm film still photography - the real start - ‘cause they started it.

Like those first 35mm cameras, the new Q3 shoots in a 24mm x 36mm format and makes jpeg and DNG images that can be viewed and translated by nearly everything. You are not stranded with an unreadable file.

You do not take the lens off the front of the camera and risk letting dirt inside. You DO have the option of adjusting the lens to work at a wide, medium wide, and standard focal length with no loss of resolution.

The camera is self-contained, and has the traditional Leica rounded ends. It is heavy, but not a killer. It is superbly-built.

The details depart from there into modernity - the shutter speeds expand and soar - the camera connects to smart devices and modern programs both by radio signals and cables.

It becomes a better motion picture camera than ever existed in the 20th century…and incidentally demands that you become a better video shooter than you’ve ever been…

And it may become the only camera you ever have again - because it may be the one that does everything you ever want to do rather perfectly.

Note: The bling is extra. That’s a set of brass machined accessories on the display model; lens hood, thumb rest, and shutter button. You must decide for yourself if the aesthetics or functionality are improved thereby.

For myself, I prefer the sleek rounded shape and the all-black appearance, but should I ever win enough money at three-card monte to buy one, I would still keep the red dot visible and hang it from an iconic red Leica neck strap. Flaunting is only a small sin…
