Nikon Presents Steve Parish Photo Walk

on August 31, 2018
An extra Saturday column to herald a special weekday Nikon event... Well, they say that if you behave you get a treat. I must have been extra good, because I get to go on the Photo Walk with Nikon and Steve Parish this coming Thursday - the 6th of September. Yay. It will be held in Kings Park and Steve is going to show some of the expertise that he commands when it comes to photographing wildflowers. In fact he's suggested that the people who go on this walk take along a telephoto lens or a macro lens as well as their camera to do the job. believe me - he knows what he is talking about...as anyone who has ever seen one of his books in a high-end or tourist bookstore would attest. In fact, if you have ever been to the Post office, it is likely you've seen some of his work on offer. I was fortunate enough to attend a talk he did at a professional conference a few years ago and was taken with the honest way he presented what he does. At the time he had just recovered some of his goods from a disastrous Queensland flood, and hope his fortunes have improved in the meantime. Kings Park is on high ground, and the weather bureau shows cloudy but dry conditions for Thursday, so we should be safe. I hope the wildflowers are going to cooperate - I'm wary of the little things as they tend to hide until I pass by and I miss out on some of the best shots. This may be where Steve succeeds with a telephoto...he stalks the dandelions ( Dad Joke N0.58 ) from a distance...possibly downwind. Theis photo is what happened when I walked past a rose-bush... I won't pre-empt what he has to say, because he is the expert, but as well as the macro lens, I'm going to take a small flash on a cord. There are times when I want clear illustration rather than an artistic rendering, and getting light into shade seems to do it for me. If your camera has a pop-up flash it might be all you need. I have no idea whether the LED lights that you saw in the column all this week would be a good idea...but if you're going to be hauling things through the bush, big panels would be a mistake - make it the Lume Cube or the small Aputure panel if anything... The heading picture on this column is pinched directly from the rest of the Camera Electronic advertising for this event - one of the many that we hold throughout the year - but you'll need to go to the regular website for more details on getting to the Photowalk. It's a nice photo of Steve, but he's not a big socialite so don't expect him to bring a bird to every party...
